B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry

This programme seeks to expose students to broad areas of the theories and practice of the fundamental aspects of all branches of Chemistry. Modern Society requires an all-round individual as a result of increasing interdependency of the sciences. The Department therefore aims to offer a thorough grounding in theoretical, experimental and operational aspects of Chemistry, as it relates to the Chemical Industry. This will enable Nigeria and Africa to have a new breed of well-trained high-level manpower that can apply the principles of Chemistry to national and international development.

Industrial Chemistry Students should:

    • Have firm foundations in the fundamentals and application of current chemical and scientific theories
    • Be able to design, carry out, record and analyze results of chemical experiments
    • Have the ability to use modern instrumentation and classical techniques to design experiments and properly record results of their findings
    • Be skilled in problems solving, critical thinking and analytical reasoning
    • Be able to identify and solve chemical problems and explore new areas of research
    • Possess the ability to use modern library searching and retrieval methods to obtain information about topics, chemicals, chemical techniques or issues relating to chemistry
    • Know and can follow the proper procedures and regulations for safe handling and use of chemicals and equipment
    • Be able to communicate results of their work and research to chemists and non-chemists
    • Understand the ethical, historic, philosophical and environmental dimensions of problems and issues facing chemists.

The objective of Industrial Chemistry is to develop:

    • High caliber industrial chemists who will be equipped to man responsible industrial positions as well as self-reliant ventures
    • Chemists who will probe into the vast natural resources of Nigeria in order to accumulate relevant chemical data
    • Chemists keenly interested in pursuing postgraduate studies and research in Chemistry
    • Chemists capable of collaborative efforts with other scientists in inter-disciplinary areas
    • Chemists who are capable of utilizing chemical knowledge and skills in the service of developing national economy, as well as improving man’s environment and his general well-being
    • And train students to be result-oriented specialists in the chemical, petrochemical, biochemical and allied technological fields.
