The predominant cost of an overhead transmission system is the line coast . with the trend of increasing transmission voltages . insulation requirement appear to be the main factor which affect the cost .it is known that switching overlatages are the criteria ion by which the which the insulates of EHV systems has to be designed there are two reasons why switching surges . especially reclosing overvoltage’s , draw more attention than lightning Impulses in EHV systems above 500 kv . first , the air gap flashover characteristics become saturated as the gap length increases . for impulse voltage of long duration such as switching surges .second , in EHV systems , the reclosing surges are frequently generated and the crest – value become higher as a result of high speed reclosing operation which causes the Sam phenomena as restriping in circuit breakers . hence , the knowledge of switching surge waveshape , magnitude and duration has become an economic necessity .
