Faculty of Engineering. Department of Nuclear Engineering. In this thesis the interaction of ions with solids is studied. The scattering of krypton ions, in the incident particle energy of 9 Kev, from gold targets is studied theoretically. In this treatment the electronic and nuclear energy losses are included in a computer simulation model. The computer simula¬tion technique has been developed to study the inter¬action of the incident ions and target atoms for this energy range. The theoretical model is based on a Thomas-Fermi interatomic potential. The backscattered energy and angular distribut¬ions are calculated by following the histories of a large number of particles. An experimental system using the time-of-flight technique to measure the energy spectra of heavy ions and neutrals back¬scattered from solid surfaces is shown in Appendix A, thus permitting a comparison of the theory with experimental data for a well characterised target. a)Thesis(M.SC) –Partial fulfilment .
