The effect of ammonia inhalation on the nasal respiratory mucosa of mice was studied histopathologically and histochemically in 3>0 experimental animals. Twenty control animals were kept in the same environment but not exposed to ammonia. The experimental group were exposed in groups of 5 sA a time to 800 p.p.m. ammonia for 10-15 minutes daily up to7 weeks. After 2 days of the last exposure the animals were sacrificed and the mucosa of the nasal respiratory portions were dissected out and investigated histopathologically and histochemically. The following findings were observed in the respiratory nasal mucosa of the exposed group. 1- The nasal epithelial cells of all exposed animals became more crowded and their surface presented crypts.The cilia were partially lost.The goblet cells appeared less numerous. Patches of squamous metaplasia were seen.
