Most of the injectors employed in agricultural equipments and in power plants are of the swirl type due to its simplicity and good characteristics. In the swirl spray nozzles the liquid is fed into the swirl chamber through tangential ports or through fixed spiral passage, to give a swirling motion. This gives the liquid a high angular velocity, which creates an air cored vortex at the centre of the cbamber. The rotating liquid flows out of the chamber through central orifice as a hollow conical sheet, which then breaks up into droplets. Although a great deal of investigation has been carried out on the liquid spray, no explicit consideration of the physical properties of mixing and spreading processes were taken. These include the droplet size distribution and the factors that affect it. These problems have led in recent years to a renewal of interest in the atomization characteristics of the swirl atomizers.
