DISTRIBUTION OF STRESSES IN BEAMS WITH OPENINGS In some instances it is desirable to permit the passage of utility components through openings in the webs of differ~nt• beams. Since the presence of such openings will inevitably affect the in-plane stresses in these webs especially in the vicinity ef the opening, the improtance of analysing these beams becomes evidont.The present report is a thesis that presents an effort in which the deflections and the in-plane ~~!esse~ o of rectangular plates with unreinforced rectangular holes are investigate~. The steps of analysis as well as uffi¬cient theoretical background are described in detail within this literature. The analysis is limited to the elastic range of stresses. No attempt is made to study the stresses in the plastic range or the ultimate strength of the beams.
