The determination of the elastic critical loading pattern of a set of rigidly-jointed plane trusses, through its non-linear behaviour can be achieved upon the consideration of one or more of the following basic effects in the analysis . 1) The effects of member instability, in which the ben¬ding stiffness of a member is influenced by the mag¬nitude of the axial load P ij . Where the suffices i,j refer to the member end nodes. The use of the previously established stability functions S and C(2) , are consistent with the assumption that the local member deformations are small . 2) The effects of large deflections of the structure as a whole, but the deformations of an individual mem¬ber from its chord are assumed to be small.
