Spread spectrum techniques are treated in this thesis as a new class of digital communications. In particural, the application of spread spectrum techniques to multiple—access systems using code—division multiplexing (CDM) is investigated. These techniques have great advantages in the presence of jamming and interference and are suitable for military applications. The main subject treated in this thesis is the optimization of the code sequences used in direct—Sequence spread spectrum multiple access systems (DS—SSMA)•In particular, sets of m—sequ ences and Gold sequences are treated. For multiple—access syst ems with limited number of users the optimum codes are shown to be specially selected maximal connected sets of m—sequences. While for large number of users, optimized sets of Gold codes are used. Numerical examples are presented which yield the optimum codes, their correlation parameters and their performance in SSMA systems. Field experimental results that show the great advantages of spread spectrum systemsin jamming enviroments are also presented. a)Thesis(M.SC)Alex-UN.Fac.of Eng.Dep.of Electrical Engineering. a)Spread spectrum techniques are treated in this thesis as a new class of digital communications.
