Creating new ventures through entrepreneurial orientation: Middle line managers perspectives

Abstract

In order to counter rivalry competition, Organisations strives to employ different strategies that will give them edge so as to take advantage of the market leadership. It is against this perception that organisations adopt entrepreneurial orientation as a tool for overcoming their competitors and also expand their operational base. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and venture creation by middle line managers in Nigeria. Cross-sectional research design was adopted. Accessible population of this study covered forty small and medium enterprises operating in Enugu State, Nigeria while the sample frame includes one hundred and eighty middle line managers drawn from small and medium enterprises. Frequency distribution was used to analyses the demographic profiles of the participants. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to analyses the research hypotheses formulated. This study found that entrepreneurial orientation has positive significant relationship with venture creation. The study concludes that entrepreneurial orientation determinants measured in terms of perceived opportunities (PO); risk taking (RT); innovativeness (INV) and proactiveness (PRA) engenders the creation of new ventures. The implication of this study is that owners of medium and small enterprises should encourage their managers to acquire the necessary entrepreneurial skills such as proactiveness (PRA); risk taking (RT); innovativeness (INV) and perceived opportunities that will equip them to create new businesses outside the existing ones so as to provide more employment opportunities for the citizens that are ready and willing to work.

Dr. FRIDAY OGBU EDEH is a distinguished scholar and an academician of National and International repute. He holds M.Sc (Management) and Ph.D (Human Resource Management). He is a Lecturer in Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management & Social Sciences, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. He has 4 years of teaching experience as faculty in Management, Human Resource Management, Organisational Behaviour, Entrepreneurship and, Business Policy & Strategy. He has published 45 Research Papers in renowned Journals and also presented 8 Research Papers in National and International conferences. He serves as Editorial Board Member for three International Journals. He has participated in both national and international conferences as well as webinars.
 
Dr. GEORGINA I. EDEOGA is a renowned and reputable teaching staff in the Department of Human Resource and Personnel Management, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria. She is a Member of both Departmental and College Postgraduate Committees. She was the Ag. Director, Center for Gender and Child Development (CGCD) from 2012 to 2015, and Chairperson, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike Women Association (MOUAUWA) from 2011 to 2016. As Director and Chairperson of the two prestigious Directorate and Association in the University, she organized Gender Stakeholders’ Summit and Award Ceremony for Abia and neighbouring States in Nigeria, Workshop on In-House Gender Project Training for Women in Academic and Administration, and Workshop on Productivity Enhancement and Motivation for Teachers in University Community (MOUAU) just to mention but a few. Dr. (Mrs) Edeoga has published over twenty 25 research papers in reputable National and International Journals and has attended International Conferences. She is a Fellow, Nigerian Institute of Manpower Development and Industrial Relations (NIMDIR), and Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria. She hold Bachelor of Public Administration (Second Class Honors Upper Division), Distinctions in Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Human Resource Management.
 
IKECHUKWU DIALOKE (Associate Professor) is a distinguished scholar and an academician of National and International. He holds Ph.D in Human Resources Management; Masters of Science in Public Administration and Local Government (M.Sc) as well as Masters of Public Administration (M.P.A). He is a Lecturer in the Department of Industrial Relations & Personnel Management, College of Management Sciences, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Nigeria. He has won the Research Grant from Council for the Development of Economic & Social Science Research in Africa (CODESIRIA), 1994 & 1998. He serves as member Editorial Board School of Business & Management Technology, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba. He has published 50 Research Papers in renowned Journals and also presented Research Papers in National and International conferences.
