Transforming the way we communicate: How AI influences the direction and future of communication

Introduction

Despite its intense complexity, the communication discipline has continued to absorb changes due to technological advancement. The advancement of artificial intelligence has further enhanced communication and contributed to the flow of information in recent years. This has greatly influenced information exchanges within and outside organizations. The use of artificial intelligence tools has also introduced communication to new ways and is currently shaping its future worldwide.

How AI influences our direction of communication

Interaction is the fundamental method by which individuals develop understandings of one another, establish and uphold connections with society, and accomplish collective goals. According to Seidenglanz and Baier (2023), “In the field of PR/communications management, too, there are numerous challenges and changes resulting from the use of AI, most recently from tools such as ChatGPT.”

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been advancing quickly lately (hey ChatGPT/Bing Chat), and it is becoming a commonplace aspect of our daily lives. AI is becoming a crucial component of our daily communication, appearing in everything from chatbots and virtual assistants to voice aides like Siri and Alexa. It’s obvious that artificial intelligence (AI) will have a significant impact on people like us, society, and communication because ChatGPT is the fastest-growing “app” ever.

The artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot and writing assistant is significantly altering and revolutionizing the way people communicate and interact with technology (Mvondo et al., 2023). According to Similarweb (2023), “ChatGPT has been a sensational hit since its launch in November 2022. It attracted 100 million users just two months after launching and averaged 25 million daily visitors in January 2023, making it the fastest-growing consumer application ever.”

Chatbots are commonly used as company representatives to improve customer service, engage and entertain customers, and support businesses by either replacing or augmenting human support agents with AI (Chung et al., 2020; Jin & Youn, 2021).

Many organizations within the communication industry are quickly catching up with technology by embedding AI tools in their day-to-day activities to improve work efficiency.

The Future of Communication with Artificial Intelligence

Among the major developers and investors in AI research that also use this technology are the social networks. As AI is an interdisciplinary field, it calls for the collaboration of many disciplines for the creation of its theoretical framework and its ethical code so as to stand as a beneficial force for society.

The potential advantages of AI in communication outweigh its risks and difficulties by a wide margin. AI will grow more complex and capable of comprehending and reacting to human communication in more subtle and natural ways as it develops.

We are just now starting to realize the extent to which artificial intelligence (AI) can change communication. We can increase efficiency and accessibility, boost customization, and gain from predictive skills by utilizing AI.

Conclusion

AI tools such as chatbots will continue to seek support from other disciplines for collaboration so that they can continue to create meaningful contents that can be used for public consumption. Studies have started documenting the perspectives of people on the use of such tools by being applicable, providing useful information, and being relevant to the industry. More so, the prompt response of the information received by users is another area that will continue to transform the communication industry, as experts have highlighted.
