M.Sc. Microbiology
The philosophy of the programme is hinged on producing knowledgeable skilled post-graduate students with well-trained minds, who possess good exposure in the basic aspects of Microbiology and at the same time develop them towards specialization in an aspect of Microbiology.
The goals of a postgraduate degree in microbiology are to advance knowledge and understanding of microorganisms and their interactions with the environment, other organisms and human health. Postgraduate programmes in microbiology are designed to provide scholars with specialized training and research opportunities to deepen their understanding of various aspects of microbiology which includes:
- Research and Discovery: Postgraduate microbiology programmes aim to foster research skills and promote scientific investigation in the field. Students are encouraged to explore new areas of microbiology, conduct original research and contribute to the existing body of knowledge.
- Specialization: Postgraduate studies allow students to specialize in a particular area of microbiology based on their interests and career goals. This could include sub-disciplines such as medical microbiology, industrial microbiology, environmental microbiology, microbial genetics or microbial ecology.
- Advanced Knowledge: Postgraduate microbiology programmes provide in-depth knowledge of microorganisms, their structure, physiology, genetics and biochemical pathways. Students learn about the diversity of microorganisms, their classifications and the mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis.
- Technical Skills: Students acquire advanced laboratory techniques and skills necessary for conducting microbiological research. This includes proficiency in culturing microorganisms, molecular biology techniques, microscopy, bioinformatics and data analysis.
- Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Postgraduate studies in microbiology aim to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students learn to analyze complex data, interpret research findings and apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios and challenges in microbiology.
- Collaboration and Communication: Postgraduate programmes encourage collaboration and effective communication skills among students. This includes presenting research findings at conferences, writing scientific papers and engaging in scientific discussions within the microbiology community.
The objectives of a Postgraduate programme in Microbiology are:
- To produce high level manpower in the microbiology stream through the acquisition of requisite skills and knowledge for national development.
- To produce knowledgeable post-graduate scholars having self-confidence and problem-solving skills for national development.
- To produce post-graduates who will be adequately equipped for relevance in the global knowledge economy.
- To produce post-graduates who are capable of applying appropriate scientific principles to solve problems for the promotion of human well-being.
- To produce manpower with optimal competencies and skills to function effectively in the academic and private sectors.
- To produce Microbiologist who can be self-employed and possibly employ others.
- Train students to be able to complete Ph.D. degree trainings without difficulty.
