Changing Gear: Skyline University Nigeria hosts Addy Basic School and Summerfield International School for career session

In its continuous effort to ensure youth select the best careers to realize their dreams, Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has conducted a changing gear session for the final-year students of Addy Basic School and Summerfield International School. The program was conducted yesterday, 23rd October, 2024, at the newly launched Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso auditorium.

The students were first engaged by the Assistant Marketing Manager at SUN on the importance of networking and mentorship. He admitted both are essential in helping the students easily navigate their post-secondary school journeys. Life comes with different components, and mentorship plays a strategic role in giving guidance and focus to attain success.

In her opening remarks, the Director of Government and Public Relations at SUN said she welcomes the students on behalf of the university’s management for the program. She encouraged them to make the best use of the information they will gain for making the best career decisions.

Mr. Abdullahi Sani, a staff member in the School of Science and Information Technology (SSIT), started the first session on the topic ‘Cybersecurity Essential’. He explained that with that advancement of technology, there have been increased threats by individuals trying to access people’s information for various reasons using electronic devices; this is why cybersecurity is needed today, he said.

The cybersecurity expert stated that there are white hackers operating with permission to hack, black hackers who operate without permission and grey hackers who operate with and without permission. In all, he stated that hacking is a professionally accepted act if done with the permission of individuals or companies. He then suggested career options in the field of cybersecurity that the students can pursue, such as cybersecurity analyst, security administrator, security engineer, crypto analyst, e.t.c.

In the second segment, Dr. Saminu Umar, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at SUN, delivered a session on ‘Virtual Reality’. He said technology is continuing to transform, and youth are privileged to be part of the transformation. He said VR plays a vital role in education, cultural emersion, historical reenactments and social awareness. Dr. Umar encouraged the students to explore the enormous benefit of the technology in learning from their peers globally. In Nigeria, he said VR will greatly impact the future of education in peer integration, personalized learning, collaborative innovation and global connections.

The session ended with a tour around the campus of SUN.
