The Department of Economics at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has commenced Economics Week with a guest lecture session by Ja’iz Bank officials on Islamic banking. The economics week, which started on Monday, May 13th, 2024, is expected to come to draw its curtains on Friday, May 17th, 2024.
Delivering the opening remarks for the guest lecture and to declare the opening of the week, Mr. Trimisiyu Lawal, a lecturer in the Department of Economics at SUN, explained that the economics week is conducted to expose students studying economics and other related courses to new trends and opportunities available in the field.
He said the week-long events will consist of guest lectures, technical visits and other practical activities that will greatly enhance students learning. Mr. Lawal then introduced the officials of Ja’iz Bank, Mr. Muhammad Lawal, Mr. Faisal Abdullahi and Mr. Ibrahim Dauda, and appreciated them on behalf of the university’s management for accepting the invitation to speak to the students.
In his lecture titled ‘Financial Inclusion: Overcoming Interest Rate Barriers through Islamic Banking Services’, Mr. Muhammad explained thoroughly the rationale behind Islamic Banking in Nigeria and how it works to prevent the use of interest rates in financial dealings.
He added that “financial inclusion guarantees that people and businesses have access to high-quality financial services, which is essential for promoting economic growth and decreasing poverty.”
Delivering her closing remarks, Ms. Aisha Abdulaziz, the president of the Economics Club at SUN, expressed her gratitude to the university’s management for supporting their activities throughout the week. She specially thanked the Ja’iz Bank officials for speaking to the students. Finally, she appreciated level 100, 200 and 400 students for their keen attention during the session.
The session concluded with the awarding of a memento to the Ja’iz Bank guest speakers by the Dean of the School of Arts, Social and Management Sciences (SAMSS), Dr. Sudha Mavuri.
