The Human Resource Department at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has on Friday 22nd 2024, conducted comprehensive Staff Development Program on ‘Stress Management and Well-Being’ aimed at enhancing employees’ mental health and overall productivity. The virtual event was organized for both faculty and operational staff of the institution.
Delivering a lecture during the session, Dr. Malachy Udo Usoro, a faculty in the department of management at the university, said “Stress has emerged as a global issue that impacts people from all areas of life. Meeting deadlines, juggling work and personal obligations, or overcoming unforeseen obstacles in life can all cause stress, which can have an adverse effect on one’s mental and physical health. Effective stress management, however, aims to promote general wellbeing in addition to lessening its effects.”
Dr. Usoro said Stress is the body’s natural response to challenging situations. While some stress can be motivating (eustress), chronic or unmanaged stress can have adverse effects. He said staff must adopt effective strategies for stress management so that they can be efficient all the time. Some of the proactive strategies he mentioned during the session include; Time Management, Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques, Healthy Lifestyle Choices, Building Support Networks, Seeking Professional Help, e.t.c.
In conclusion the management professional said the goal of stress management is to acquire the skills and attitude necessary to successfully handle life’s obstacles, not to eradicate it. The staff can create a balanced life where stress no longer determines their quality of life by adopting practices that support their physical, emotional, and social well-being. Start small by finding a stress-reduction strategy that works for you and implementing it into your everyday schedule.
