Mass Communication students participate in ACSPN webinar on digital communication

Students of the Mass Communication Department at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) have participated in a one-day webinar organized by the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (SUN). The webinar, Ask Me Series 2024, was conducted on Tuesday, July 16th, 2024, with communication students, professionals and scholars across Nigeria in attendance.

Delivering his lecture titled ‘Digital communication for governance: from the old to the new, how prepared are we?’, the guest speaker, Mr. Chris Tunde Odediran, explained that technology is transforming rapidly and we all need to catch up. He said a new generation of communicators must be trained to embrace technology and embed it in their everyday engagements to make it a priority.

Mr. Odediran, a journalist, technical writer and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) expert, admitted that communication has changed, forcing all sectors to embrace it to enhance work efficiency. He referred to the physical delivery of mail that has been replaced by emails and most commonly, social media, which challenges the orthodox form of social interaction.

He then encouraged the students to start carving their niche in their desired field of endeavor before graduation, as this will help them refine their skills, which are needed in the professional world.

SUN students asked questions about the available laws in Nigeria that protect the data of internet users, sanctions for offenders and the execution of the laws in the country. They also commented on how technology has impacted teaching and learning in higher education institutions, referencing Alexa Chatbots, smart boards and other digital tools available at SUN to aid their studies.

In his remarks during the session, Dr. Saminu Umar, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at SUN, appreciated ACSPN on behalf of the management of SUN for choosing the prestigious institution to be among the participants. He highlighted that the students have certainly gained invaluable knowledge that will be a lifelong benefit to them.
