In its continuing orientation for the new students of the 2024/2025 Academic Year, Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) hosted school principals from various schools in Kano to share lead special sessions aimed at equipping students with essential social skills that will help them navigate university life and build meaningful connections. Ms. Jamila Haq, Ms. Jihane Kashanna Dib, and Mrs. Alpana Mishra led insightful sessions for the freshmen.
In her speech titled ‘Empowering young minds—Insights for successes, Ms. Jamila Haq, the principal of Lebanon School, talked about the importance of personal growth, development, and skills as important tools for surviving university time. She encouraged them to not be afraid of trying new things, as failure is a path to success. She explained that journeys are different and full of turns, and as such, they must master the skillset of survival.
On her part, Ms. Jihane Kashanna Dib discussed ‘Mastering Time’. She highlighted the need for the students to set goals and break tasks into manageable sizes that they can accomplish. She gave practical examples of how procrastination kills efficiency and is an enemy of success. She advised them to revise their goals when necessary to see how much they have accomplished over a period of time.
Mrs. Alpana Mishra delivered a session on ‘Maximize retention’. She said the students are lucky to be a part of an international and reputable community that aims to support them in advancing their choices of study. Mrs. Mishra, a seasoned educational expert, said retention is very key at their stage. She encouraged them to retain as much knowledge as they can, as such experiences are what they would utilize in the future.
Also, Mr. Unni, an expert in the hospitality industry who was present during the session, highlighted the importance of soft skills. He said human resource managers value such skills in a young graduate, which is why the university has invested so much in the orientation program.
