The School of Legal Studies conducted a guest lecture for its students yesterday, October 17, 2024, at the Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) campus. The lecture, themed “How to overcome challenges faced by prospective lawyers,” was delivered by a seasoned legal practitioner in Kano State, Bar. Fa’iza Yunusa Yusuf, NBA, FIDA, MULAN.
In his opening remarks for the session, Dr. Abubakar Ali Chifwang, a lecturer in the School of Legal Studies (SLS) at SUN, stated that it is important in the legal profession for students to interface with field experts so that they can enrich their knowledge and be prepared before they commence their careers. He commended the guest speaker for gracing the session.
The guest lecturer, Bar. Yusuf, speaking on behalf of Bar. Huwaila Ibrahim Muhammad Esq., said, ‘I am privileged to stand here today to discuss the challenges faced by prospective lawyers. The topic is very timely at a time when technology is rapidly developing, thereby distracting students from studying hard.”
She explained that the greatest of all challenges is that one has to study hard in the legal profession. Studying extra hard as other students is the key to success, she said. Moreover, she emphasized that interest in the course is also paramount as it drives one to achieving set goals and objectives.
Challenges faced by law students are classified into 2 categories: during undergraduate programs and the law school. While lectures demand that students read hard, the law school presents more of a practical learning experience. Hence, the challenges are different but can be escaped.
She advised the students to be careful with social media, be focused, be realists and involve practicality in their journey. Bar. Yusuf said it is important for the students to select their career path from school by conducting a SWOT analysis of themselves. This process helps them to streamline their goals in school and post-school.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Muhammad Nuruddeen, a lecturer in the School of Legal Studies (SLS) at SUN, appreciated the guest speaker for coming to the university. He lauded the advice given to the students as very important as they navigate the challenges of the prospective journeys. He added that law is built on respect and humbleness. They are paramount and earned in the legal profession, he said.
