The School of Science and Information Technology (SSIT) at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN), has today, November 1st, 2024 concluded its Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2024. The event was in line with the global commemoration which happens in the month of October every year. Level 200, 300 and 400 students from the departments of cybersecurity, computer science and software engineering participated in the week long even that started on Monday, October 28th 2024.
On day 1 and 2, the students were engaged in paper presentations and participated in meme and poster creations. These were delivered to allow students engage with their peers and learn from one another through group discussions.
The third day, October 30th 2024, was a rigorous awareness campaign within the university’s campus about the need to protect personal spaces on the online fora from hackers. Different departments were visited by the students to share updated information on how staff can protect their data. Students demonstrated processes of safeguarding data for the staff.
The students were lectured by a cybersecurity expert, Mr. Ahmad Hashim, a senior software engineer and trainer, on ‘Navigating Incidences and Implementing Counter Measures’ on Thursday 31st October 2024. Mr. Hashim gave an interesting practical session on how malwares and hacking affect the users of the cyber space. He majorly encouraged the students to inculcate higher cognitive thinking skills which will enable them solve challenges for users in the future.
Additionally, the students were lectured on November 1st, 2024 by Mr. Nura Isah Waziri, who is also a senior software engineer and trainer. He delivered a session on ‘Cybersecurity in Nigeria and ways to protect it’. The expert trainer highlighted the opportunities available within Nigeria’s public and private sectors for the students interested in pursuing careers in cybersecurity with relatable industry expectations and necessary certifications needed.
