Schools of SSIT and SBMS conduct Viral Disease Awareness Week 2024

The Schools of Science and Information Technology (SSIT) and School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS) at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) have conducted a Viral Disease Awareness Week for this year from November 25th to 29th, 2024.

The week-long session was done to inform students and the university community about the dangers of viral diseases and how to take precautions against contracting the diseases. The Departments of Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Medical Laboratory Science participated in the awareness week.

The week commenced with a presentation competition for students. In this, the students from all the participating departments took part in a presentation competition. Victors during this session were applauded for the accuracy and coherence in simplifying complex medical terminologies. On Tuesday, November 26th 2024, the students were involved in a poster presentation competition/drama. Students presented information on viral diseases in engaging visual and dramatic representations.

On November 27th and 28th 2024, the students had two guest lecture sessions delivered by Prof. Akande Oyebanji Azeez and Mr. Haruna Khalifa. As an expert in infectious disease, epidemiology, diagnosis, and prevention/control, among others, Prof. Azeez presented on emerging diseases and how youth can participate in creating innovative solutions to combat emerging disease challenges. On his part, Mr. Khalifa delivered a session on viruses and their types. He explained how viruses exist and affect the human body.

The viral disease awareness ended with a rally and voluntary testing for HIV. The students marched in the school with placards with information on viral diseases like HIV/AIDS and how it affects millions of people around the world. Over 100 students and SUN staff had free testing for HIV/AIDS tests. A significant number also had their first dose of the Hepatitis B vaccination.
