Kano’s First International Private University, Skyline University Nigeria (SUN), at the weekend, albeit for the first time since inception, organized an all-round female sports’ festival for students of the university community to commemorate the International Women’s Day, a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

While making a statement on the purpose of the sports festival, the Sports Instructor of the university, Mrs. Stella Ekau, disclosed that the festival was done to encourage female participation in sports by bringing out hidden talents and creativity. “Many girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys. Through the female sports festival, we have been able to get the female students to actively participate in sports and initiated a platform that will support their continuous involvement in the games.

“We are glad to see so many students come out to support what we are doing. We believe that girls’ participation in sports will help them learn important life-skills such as teamwork, leadership and confidence. Although some of the female students still feel the need to participate less in sports, we have encouraged them that sports will help enhance their self-image. Mrs. Stella stated.
