Mr. Bashir Usman, a lecturer from the Department of Mass Communication in Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has been elected ICT Office II, in the recently concluded Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) 11th Annual Conference and General Meeting held on September 4th and 5th, 2024, at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State.
Mr. Bashir will be working under the new leadership of President, Professor Rotimi W. Olatunji of Lagos State University. Other newly elected members of the association Deputy President, South West Prof. Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, University of Lagos, Deputy President South East/South South, Prof Ifeyinwa Nsude, Deputy President, Deputy President, North Dr. Rukayya Aliyu, Bayero University, Vice-President, South East Prof. Uwaoma Uche, DVC (Administration), Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, Vice-President and South West Mr. Lanre Arogundade, International Press Centre (IPC) among others.
Held under the leadership of its Prof. Umaru A. Pate, the conference themed “Digital Communication and Governance in Africa,” and was conducted in collaboration with prominent Nigerian universities and institutions including Lagos State University, Covenant University, Caleb University, Crescent University, Nigeria Institute of Journalism, Olabisi Onabanjo University, International Press Centre, Ajayi Crowther University, D. S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, and the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON).
Prof. Pate delivered the opening address of the conference. Thereafter, Mr. Dapo Olorunyomi, the Publisher of Premium Times delivered the keynote address. He was reported to have talked about “crises of funding and information disorder within Africa’s news media industry.” In support of a national strategy on AI initiatives, he highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve governance and the delivery of public services, but he also warned against ethical problems.
During the conference, a number of important topics were discussed, including the need to support networks between communication scholars and practitioners. The significance of creating literature and organizations for communication.
