SUN Library department hosts a seminar on AI Solutions for Libraries

Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) Library department has hosted librarians for a seminar today, February 13th 2025, at the university’s campus. The session was organized to orient librarians in Kano State on the importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions in research and everyday activities in the libraries.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Abdullahi Bala Shehu, the head librarian of SUN and the facilitator of the session, said that AI tools have revolutionized library activities around the world. He said the tools have improved efficiency and accelerated the speed at which library services are delivered.

During the session, Dr. Shehu was able to explain the basics of AI, ethical considerations in the use of AI, AI for research and preservation, practical application of some AI tools and shared practical case studies about how AI is needed in the library.

He said AI enables intelligent search systems that can understand user queries better, delivering more accurate and relevant results, and libraries can use AI to predict not only future needs and preferences but also to recommend personal suggestions for reading materials to individual users based on their preferences, borrowing history, and previous browsing and interests.

He added that AI automates repetitive tasks such as cataloging, indexing, and resource management, allowing librarians to focus on more complex, value-added services, and AI tools like chatbots, research assistants, and recommendation engines provide immediate, targeted support for academic and personal inquiries.

In their various remarks, the participants, including members of the Kano State Library Board and directors, expressed their satisfaction with the delivery of the session. They said the event was quite insightful as they were intrigued by the capacity of AI and how it can enhance their activities at work. They then appreciated the management of SUN for conducting the event.

Delivering the closing remarks, Ms. Amina Muhammed appreciated the Vice-Chancellor of SUN, Prof. Ajith Kumar V. V., for supporting the program. She applauded the organizers and participants for the successful delivery of the program.
