The Department of General Students at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has organized a guest lecture for the level 200 students of the Schools of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS) and Legal Studies (SLS). The session was delivered by Barr. Umar Isa Sulaiman, at the campus of SUN on the 16th of November, 2023.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Olumide Ajayi, a lecturer in the Department of General Studies, said the lecture is a critical aspect of career building. He explained that leadership is not a one-size-fits-all position, which is why professionals from distinct fields of endeavor are being invited to teach students the prerequisites of leadership.
Barr. Suleiman, while delivering his lecture titled ‘Leadership in the Judiciary’, highlighted that leadership in the Nigerian legal system is highly imperative. He said judiciary leadership is vast and dynamic. It conforms to every style of governance to serve the people.
He said judicial leadership plays a vital role and greatly contributes to Nigerian leadership because it interprets the law as the third tier of government. They also play the role of an arbiter. The role of the judiciary in a democracy is to interpret the law, uphold the principle of the rule of law, and also serve as a strong organ for checks and balances on other organs of government.
Barr. Suleiman concluded that the judiciary possesses enormous powers through its role in the interpretation of laws, which helps to shape public policy. Therefore, it is pertinent to preserve the prevailing role of the judiciary by fostering its independence from other arms of government, upholding diligence in the handling of cases, and championing exemplary conduct among judicial officers.
Giving the closing remarks, Dr. Ajayi thanked Barr. Suleiman for attending the guest session. He said he is confident that the students have been informed about the importance of leadership and some of the intricacies of leadership in the judiciary.
