Sports Department at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) has recently organized a five-apart football and basketball tournament for secondary schools in Kano. A total of seven secondary schools in Kano State were invited to participate in the competition, which took place at the SUN sports complex. Female students participated in the basketball tournament, while male students participated in the five-aside football competition.
In the female basketball competition, Kano Capital girls emerged winners with 21 points after beating Asha International girls, who scored 4 points in the finals. In the five-aside football competition for boys, Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC) boys emerged victorious after beating Kano Capital boys 2-1. Other schools that participated in the competition include Yandutse College, First Grade Comprehensive School and Hasiyanda International School, among others.
Delivering the opening remarks, Dr. Bashir Garba, the Director of Academic Planning (DAP) at SUN, expressed his joy over the careful preparation for the competition. He explained that sporting activities are very crucial in uniting youths for the purpose of nation-building. He said the giant strides recorded from the conduct of earlier competitions are what SUN has prioritized to ensure its annual repetition. He then motivated the students to imbibe sports as a means for fostering unity and development in addition to fitness.
Guests who attended the grand finale of the competition include Dr. Bashir Garba (DAP) at SUN, the Director of Kano State Schools Sports Association represented by Zonal Sports Director Kura LGA, Ms. Aisha S. Dauda, a sports writer from Nasara Radio Kano, Engr. Suleiman, the Manager of InterTech Football Academy, Dr. Ajayi Olumide, a lecturer at the department of general studies at SUN, and Ms. Sarada Maganti, the Director Academic Support Services (DASS) at SUN.
Giving the closing remarks, Mr. Musa Muhammad, the Head of Sports at SUN, said it was challenging and interesting to host a huge number of people for the memorable occasion. He admitted that SUN offers a great networking opportunity for youths through sports, which are encouraged worldwide. He then appreciated the management of SUN for hosting the event. He said the students had shown admirable resilience and agility.
