Skyline University Nigeria (SUN) students have conducted a breast cancer awareness outreach at Federal Government College, Kano State to mark the occasion of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October, 2024. The outreach was done yesterday October 21st 2024 by 300 and 400 level students and staff of the Department of Microbiology at the university. The aim was to raise awareness about breast cancer among the students and staff of the school.
The SUN team was received by the principal of the school Hajiya Dr. Hafsat Adebayo. She appreciated the gesture of the university for sharing useful health information that will help the students protect themselves against cancer.
Delivering the opening remarks during the program, Prof. Sanjoy Pal, a lecturer in the department of Microbiology at SUN, stated that “the problem of lack of awareness about cancer fuels the spread of the disease”. He mention that people are always reluctant to consult medical professionals for regular check-ups which contributes to the worsening of the disease.
As part of the outreach, the university students displayed educational posters that sparked conversations about breast cancer among the staff and students at the institution. Students enthusiastically participated in the events, which sparked a great deal of interest in the initiative. Chocolates were offered as rewards to participants who provided accurate answers in an effort to further promote involvement.
After realizing that men can also be affected by breast cancer, male employees of FGC Kano also paid close attention to the event. This contributed to the debunking of the myth that breast cancer is only a female health concern. Prof. Pal explained that men have breasts too and they account for 1% of the global percentage of cancer diseases.
Five students and staff delivered presentations on cancer awareness which was followed by an engaging Q&A session with the school students. Some of the students from FGC Kano shared their personal experiences with cancer and their therapeutic journeys, making the event both educational and impactful.
In closing, the principal of the school then expressed her appreciation for the program and encouraged that such initiatives be conducted in the future to continue raising awareness about the cancer and its variations.
