Prof. Bashiru Adeniyi Omipidan

Professor Bashiru Adeniyi Omipidan is the first Professor of Euthanasia Law and Medical Ethics having been so appointed by the Governing Council of the University of Ilorin on the 1st of October 2018. He had earlier emerged as the overall best Ph.D. student in law from the prestigious International Islamic University (IIUM), Malaysia in 2010 having completed his Ph.D. programme in 23 months. Bashiru has several publications to his credit in local, national and international journals of repute. He has also attended conferences and workshops, and presented papers within and outside the shores of Nigeria. He is presently on sabbatical, and the pioneer Dean of the School of Legal Studies (SLS) at Skyline University Nigeria (SUN), Kano State.

Professor Bashiru Adeniyi Omipidan joined the University of Ilorin as an assistant lecturer in 2002 as the first law alumni to be so appointed. In 2010, he emerged as the overall best Ph.D. student in law from the prestigious International Islamic University (IIUM), Malaysia, having completed his Ph.D. programme in two years. In 2012, Bashiru became the Sub-Dean of the faculty of law, a position he held until 2014 when he was moved to the postgraduate (PG) unit as the faculty PG Representative. In 2012, Omipidan also became a Senior Lecturer, and in 2015 he became an Associate Professor. On the 1st of October 2018, Omipidan became a Professor of Euthanasia Law and Medical Ethics. He served as the Chairman of the University of Ilorin Time-Table and Room Usages Committee from 2017 – 2020. He is also the first law alumni to be appointed a professor of law. Omipidan is also the founder/Initiator of Euthanasia Prevention Initiative (EPI). He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN), and the Medical Law Professional Association of Nigeria (MELPAN). He has publications in both local, National and International reputable journals. As a researcher at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Omipidan taught on-line courses from 2008 – 2010. He has equally attended trainings and workshops on open and distance learning – the latest being the one-day conference on capacity building jointly organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the University of London. He was the Director of Centre for Open and Distance Learning of the University of Ilorin from the 5th of November 2020 – July 2023. He is a certified ODL expert and a fellow of Medical Law Practitioners Association of Nigeria (FMLP).
