Skyline University Nigeria on Monday held its inaugural orientation Programmeme for students of the institution.
The event which took place at SUN campus on Zaria Road, Kano, signified the official commencement of academic activities at the institution.
The university was granted operational license by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in July.
It currently runs 15 Programmemes in two schools – School of Arts, Management and Social Sciences and School of Science and Information Technology.
In his welcome address, the university’s Head of Human Resources, Mr. Kusumadhar Pandey, congratulated the pioneer students for securing places in the university.
He said the Skyline Group, through SUN, has brought experience and quality to the students’ doorstep.
“We can collectively make SUN one of the best institutions not only in Kano but in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large,” Pandey admonished the students.
The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. P.K. Biswas, also hailed the students for being pace setters.
He said SUN would not confine itself to Kano State but spread its tentacles to different parts of the world through provision of quality education.
Prof. Biswas said: “This is an historic day for all of us. Although we are not entirely new, SUN originated from Skyline University College (SUC) in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. SUC was established 28 years ago, in 1990, to be precise. The university celebrated its silver jubilee in 2015. So you can see that we are not starting new. We have 28 years’ experience behind us.
“SUC was among the first universities in UAE. It was approved and accredited by Commission of Academic Accreditation (CAA) of Ministry of Education at UAE. It has a strong Alumni base which is well placed in government and private sectors. It is also a multi-cultural environment.
“Nigeria is one of the biggest countries in Africa but its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is not one of the best. We want to develop entrepreneurs that are technologically oriented. We are focusing on creativity and our students will be exposed to several things that will aid their development in this regard.
“We want to be a multi-disciplinary teaching and research institution. Research is one of the focus of this institution. Creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation will also be our bedrock. One of our goals is to provide dynamic academic and research environment in pursuit of excellence with integrity which can serve the society without discrimination.”
