Students Welfare & Security

All teaching and support staff work hard to ensure the welfare, safety and happiness of all students at SUN to remove barriers to learning by ensuring students get the right support so they can achieve the highest levels in all that they do.

The sports department of SUN strives to promote the social, mental and physical development of every staff & student. Sport is an integral part of SUN’s total educational process aimed at developing the overall personality of individuals for a healthy mind and body. To transform dreams into reality, the SUN sports and recreational facilities include a Football pitch, Volleyball court, Basketball court, Tennis court, Badminton court, five-aside Football pitches and classical sports changing rooms. It also provides indoor games such as Chess, Ludo, Table Tennis, Foosball, Snooker and other callisthenic activities. Zumba fitness training is also inclusive.

The Sports Department plans, organizes and conducts intra-mural, inter–secondary schools, clubs and inter-university sports activities on an annual basis to develop the spirit of competition, coordination and cooperation among the youths. The sports department of SUN along with the clinic has the responsibility of health and safety of SUN community, manage students’ hostels and engage students in community service activities.

There is a university health centre which offer 24-hours service with doctors being in attendance between 7:00a.m and 5:00p.m. every day except on Sundays and on-call rosters for the rest of the day and night. The university health centre has a consulting room, nurses, a medical laboratory, treatment room, medical records section, and a pharmacy. There are also two (2) observation rooms of five (5) bed capacity each, for male and female patients respectively. BMI (Body Mass Index) is also conducted for students to ensure body weight is properly control and managed.

The services at the centre are more of outpatients, emergencies, and uncomplicated cases. More serious cases are referred to nearby Hospitals or Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) with which the university has a referral arrangement.

Arrangements are being made to enroll all students of the university into the Tertiary Institutions Students Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP) under the federal government’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

SUN has established a security unit at takeoff which caters for the security of lives & properties of its staff and students on the campus and hostels.

The security unit is located on the 15th floor of the main building, and it is under the direct supervision of a professionally qualified and trained Chief Security Officer (CSO), who is directly supervised by the Director of Operations (DO).

The unit is well-equipped, it has well-trained staff and is adequately funded. The unit is closely linked with security agencies of government such as the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), State Fire Service (SFS) and State Security Service (SSS) to tackle unforeseen security challenges that may arise.

The security unit at SUN also strives to maintain a safer, secured and healthy campus for students, faculty staff and visitors, by developing partnerships within the university community to effectively address security concerned matters. The unit works closely with local law enforcement and community response teams to ensure the environment in which we all work and live is safe beyond reasonable doubt.
